Marijuana, (Pot), has had a strong social and economic presence on the Island for many years. Certainly for the 40 plus years that I have lived here pot has been an everyday commodity that you either used or not for whatever purpose. The fact that it was illegal to grow it or supply it to others has been irrelevant. A supply has always been available.
The federal government is apparently going to make major changes regarding the possession of marijuana in the new year. Only time will tell what those changes will be.
I think it is very important to separate the two uses that marijuana is consumed for. Socially and medically. Socially pot is generally smoked and this is a matter of personal choice by the users. This is the sector that the new legislation will address
The medical use cannabis is a totally different entity. Cannabis has been use for the relief of pain and other medical conditions for generations. I think the use of cannabis for medical purposes is just as legitimate as the many other fields of complementary health products and services that are available.
