Alzheimers Support Group Facilitators

Please note: This role is usually not suitable for college/university students.

Summary: A support group facilitator (or co-facilitator) facilitates a caregiver support group meeting, communicates with the local Support and Education Coordinator on a regular basis, maintains group attendance records and use Alzheimer Society materials to provide information to the group.

Responsibilities: Are you interested in making a real and profound difference in the lives of people caring for a family member with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia? Come join our team of dedicated support group facilitators.

Our support groups operate on an information and mutual aid model and are based on the philosophy that people with similar issues are in a unique position to offer support to others on the same journey. The objective of our groups is to strengthen the coping abilities of caregivers and reduce the impact of dementia on the community. Extensive training is provided. A support group facilitator (or co-facilitator) facilitates a caregiver support group meeting, communicates with the local Support and Education Coordinator on a regular basis, maintains group attendance records and use Alzheimer Society materials to provide information to the group.

A time commitment of 3 to 6 hours per month (determined by group schedule) is required, plus time to meet with Alzheimer Society staff as required.

Please note: A criminal record check is required prior to beginning to volunteer.

Benefits: This is a fantastic opportunity to enhance facilitation skills , increased understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and caregiving issues, knowledge that you are aiding the Alzheimer Society in being able to offer a variety of specialized support groups. Volunteer Workshop Facilitator

Position Description:

As a workshop facilitator volunteer with the Alzheimer Society of B.C, you will receive training on how to effectively facilitate selected workshops. The workshops are approximately 2 hours in length and may take place at various locations around greater Victoria.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Ability to commit to delivering at least 15 workshops a year

• Be available for one Saturday or two full week-day evenings for training.

• Be willing to assist in some of the training for future volunteers

• Keep up-to-date on current events related to Alzheimer’s Disease

• Deliver workshops to various clients and staff in the community

Skills and Qualifications:

• Excellent individual and group communication skills

• Familiarity with Power Point

• Excellent interpersonal skills

• Have flexible schedule

• Have own transportation – you will be reimbursed for travel costs

• Maintains a professional image, which reflects the values and goals of the Alzheimer Society of B.C

Required commitment:

• 1 year minimum

Training:

• Orientation/Basic training

• Further training in group facilitation skills

The First Link Support Volunteer will: Under the direction of the First Link Coordinator, make outreach telephone calls to individuals diagnosed with a dementia or their family members, discuss with the individual or caregiver, what type of resources may be most appropriate to their needs. Provide support, suggest appropriate resources (brochures, handouts, etc.), and make referrals to ASBC and other community programs as appropriate.

Benefits to Volunteering: Learn about dementia, Learn about the resources in the community, Gain experience supporting people with early stage dementia and their care partners, Inclusion in the volunteer recognition program, Free parking, Refreshments while volunteering. Description: Minds in Motion is a light fitness and social program for people experiencing early stage memory loss. A 45-minute fitness program is followed by an hour of socializing and activities such as billiards, ping pong, board games, etc. People with dementia may attend alone or with a care partner. We are seeking volunteer program assistants to help with the set up and clean up of refreshments, games and activities for the social part of the program and assist the program facilitator to ensure activity participation and socialization. This may include spending one-to-one time with participants who need extra support.. You must be physically able to participate in the fitness part of the program and have the physical ability to lift light weights (supplies).

Location / Venue: Various recreation centers around Victoria

Commitment Details. 2 hours once per week. Minimum requirement of 3-6 months, but longer commitment is preferred.
