Community Resource Guide

Community Resource Guide - Vancouver Island

What is a Community Resource?

We define a community resource as anything you can access that will improve the quality of community life. It can be a person, a place, a non-profit organization, a centre of learning, or a business offering community solutions.

Individual people are resources: The stay-at-home mom or dad who organizes a playgroup; the leader of your neighborhood block watch leader; the firefighter who risks his life to keep the community safe.

Places where people socialize are community resources, including schools, hospitals, churches, libraries, recreation centers and social clubs. It might be a second-floor room ideal for community meetings. Parks, wetlands, or outdoor spaces of special interest are also resources.

We include community service that makes life better. Services such as public transportation, early childhood education centers or even community recycling facilities.

You and everyone else in the community are potential community resource. Everyone has some skills or talents, and everyone can provide knowledge about the community, connections to the people they know, and the kind of support that every effort needs – stuffing envelopes, making phone calls, or providing needed information to people.

Everyone in the community can be a resource, a force for social improvement and quality of life. Our job is to inform you about existing community resources and help connect you with them so you can either access or assist them.

Our Resource Team works hard to verify that the information is accurate at the time of publication, and at certain intervals, we review and update information. If you see any information that is incorrect or out of date, please feel free to contact us and let us know. After all, it takes a community to promote a community!

Choice in Support for Independent Living (CSIL)

Choice in Support for Independent Living (CSIL)
Choice in Supports for Independent Living (CSIL) is an alternative for eligible home support clients. CSIL was developed to give British Columbians with daily personal care needs more flexibility in managing their home support services.
CSIL is a “self-managed model of care”. Clients receive funds directly for the purchase of home support services. They assume full responsibility for the management, co-ordination and financial accountability of their services, including recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling and supervising home support workers.
