Volunteer drivers are needed to help cancer patients on Vancouver Island

Become a Wheels of Hope volunteer driver and help cancer patients get to their life-saving treatments

Do you have some free time, enjoy driving and want to make a difference? The Canadian Cancer Society’s Wheels of Hope program is looking for more volunteer drivers on Vancouver Island.

“We’re currently seeking at least three volunteer drivers in each of the following areas: Port Hardy, Port McNeill, Port Alice and Sayward,” said Mark Kahan, volunteer coordinator at the Canadian Cancer Society. “Volunteers primarily help transport cancer patients to local treatment centres or connect them with other drivers for appointments in Victoria.”

What are the volunteer requirements?

  • Monday to Friday availability — ideally a half day per week or a few days per month — ongoing for at least six months. The program is very flexible and will accommodate vacations and other personal commitments
  • A valid driver’s license with three or fewer demerits and access to a 100% smoke-free vehicle
  • Willingness to complete a criminal background check and provide references.

“As a volunteer driver, you can give the meaningful gift of a ride—helping people with cancer get to and from their life-saving treatments and medical appointments. Mileage reimbursement or a charitable tax receipt will be provided,” Kahan added.
It’s easy to sign up: Visit www.volunteercancer.ca, email volunteer@cancer.ca or call 1-888-939-3333 today!

Editor’s note –
I can personally vouch as to the importance, and the need, for this type of incredible service. This service was there and available when it was needed emotionally and financially at a critical time for our family.

They are looking particularly for volunteer drivers in the North Island including Port Hardy, Port McNeill, Port Alice, and Sayward as well as in Tofino and Ucluelet.
