BC Declares State of Emergency as BC Wildfire Forces Summerland Evacuation
British Columbia has declared a provincial state of emergency as a fast-moving BC wildfire forces the evacuation of Summerland and adds to an already serious wildfire situation across the province.
The emergency is having a significant impact on seniors. Interior Health has evacuated more than 230 residents from two Summerland care homes because of the Bald Range wildfire.
Approximately 48 residents from Dr. Andrew Pavilion and 190 residents from Summerland Seniors Village are being relocated to other facilities and safe locations, with Interior Health coordinating the evacuation and continuing care for residents.
Families concerned about loved ones who have been evacuated can contact Interior Health’s dedicated Family Information Line at 1-833-971-5045 for information about where residents have been relocated.
The Summerland evacuation comes as BC wildfires, extreme heat and dry conditions continue to create challenging conditions across parts of British Columbia.
The situation is an important reminder for seniors and their families to have an emergency evacuation plan. Essential medications, identification, medical information, mobility equipment and important contact numbers should be kept somewhere they can be quickly accessed.
Residents in affected areas should continue following official evacuation orders and alerts and be prepared to leave immediately when instructed.

Vancouver Island Wildfire Update
While the most serious wildfire activity is currently in B.C.’s Interior, Vancouver Island remains at risk as hot, dry summer conditions continue.
At this time, there are no major wildfires threatening large Vancouver Island communities or prompting evacuations comparable to those underway in Summerland. However, dry forest fuels mean conditions can change quickly, particularly if new fires are sparked during periods of heat, wind or lightning.
For seniors and families, this is a good time to prepare rather than wait for an emergency. Keep medications, identification, important phone numbers and essential supplies together, and make sure you have a plan for transportation should an evacuation become necessary.
