Feature Article – Tai Chi May Aid Stroke Patients

“In 136 patients who’d had a stroke at least six months earlier, 12 weeks of tai chi improved standing balance more than a general exercise program that entailed breathing, stretching, and mobilizing muscles and joints involved in sitting and walking.” Findings were published in the January 2009 issue of Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair.

According to new research, patients who have suffered a stroke may be able to regain some of their lost balance by practicing tai chi . . . Scientists from the University of Illinois at Chicago found that people who learned tai chi after having a stroke showed significant improvements when tested on their ability to maintain balance while shifting weight, leaning in different directions, and standing on movable surfaces (as on a bus). Their progress was evident after only six weeks of training with a physical therapist in weekly tai chi classes and practicing by themselves at home.

Done regularly, tai chi can reduce the risk of falls and injury. It also may improve circulation, flexibility, posture, blood pressure, and heart rate, as well as ease pain, reduce stress, increase energy, and prevent osteoporosis. One study even shows benefits in people with Fibromyalgia.”

Comments from Keith

More research confirming what we as 4 Minute Fitness and Easy Tai Chi practitioners already know through experience. I would encourage all our readers to use these techniques to regain lost function resulting from any condition (under medical supervision if necessary). But even better – remember that daily practice will PREVENT many problems. A prevented problem is one you will never experience. A prevented problem is the best kind.

With a new year approaching, I encourage you to move toward a lifestyle that will open your arteries, reduce cancers, increase flexibility and strength and increase vitality. In this day and age, we all know what we can do to improve health – the key is to …. just do it.

Here are just a few ideas:

1.Practice your Easy Tai Chi and 4 Minute Fitness daily. Maybe now is the time to add Easy Tai Chi CORE or upgrade to the Ultimate package. Or perhaps you want to teach? Remember – you can save 20% until Dec. 24, 2009.
2.Have fun exercising by learning to dance, walking a dog, taking swimming lessons, flying a kite, joining a hiking club, playing tennis, squash, racquetball, or?
3.Improve eating habits by cooking a vegetarian meal once or twice weekly, take a Thai cooking class, finding fun ways to add vegetables and fruits to your diet and avoiding the junk food aisles of grocery stores (by the way – most junk food isn’t really “food”. And remember – most of the aisles in the middle of stores sell junk, so stick to the outside aisles).
4.Spend more “quality” time with your partner and children. (Stephen Covey once asked – “How many people on their death beds wished they had spent MORE time at the office?”).
5.Smile as often as possible. Perhaps attend a laughter yoga class every week.

Question Period

Q.
Hi. Having practiced Tai Chi with Dr Jeffery’s DVD for a while now I was wondering if there are any tips you might share on teaching kids Tai Chi.
Thanks and regards.
A.S

A.
Thanks for your email. By far the best tai chi for kids is 4 Minute Fitness. It is wonderfully effective for adults as a supplement to tai chi practice and a means of reducing stress, pain, fatigue and worry, and it is a lot of fun for children who usually find traditional tai chi boring. 4 Minute Fitness is visually interesting, easy to do and almost instantly effective. Best to order the $10 add on – Heal Your Mind, Heal Your Body – as it will help you understand the process even more. With increased understanding, you will create more personal benefits, but you will also be much more effective in teaching it to your family.
