Surviving Holiday Dining – 10 life saving tips
On average, Americans weigh an astounding 25 pounds more now than they did just 80 years ago. And in a relatively short period of time, 40% of the population will be not just fat, but obese. Fact is – food is so tasty and abundant these days that it is hard to keep the pounds off, especially at this time of year. Here are a few tips that will keep you from adding even more pounds to your girth AND improve your vitality.
1. See and feel the weight
Right now, this very moment – go to your refrigerator and pick up a pound of butter or lard. Ask yourself – “how many of these do I want to add to my arteries, my gut, my butt or thighs this year”. If the answer is none, read on.
2. Out of sight, out of mind
Fill your home with lots of fruit, vegetables and whole grain snacks. Carrots, oranges and apples are delightful snacks and will satisfy cravings. Keep any junk food out of sight.
3. Shop smart
AVOID leaving temptation on every surface. DO NOT BUY fat and sugary snacks and candies. They may be comfort foods, but they are deadly! See this junk not as food, but as poison.
4. Be choosey – just one a day
Don’t your life feeling deprived. When you need to, pick a small helping of your favorite indulgence and savour it.
5. Make it fun
Play “calorie saving” games. Get creative. For example, rather than drowning your food with gravy, dip it. And avoid the turkey skin (saving a whopping 200 calories)
6. Burn, burn, burn (calories)
Exercise everyday to reduce your appetite and increase your metabolism!
7. Add to tradition
Add exercise to your family traditions. This year, walk or cycle to your favorite coffee shop or to visit friends rather than drive. And – begin your exercise NOW, so you are already in the swing of things by Christmas.
8. Create smart snacks
Serve bowls of popcorn rather than chips. (But avoid the butter – use good quality oil, soy sauce, and spices like Mr. Dash.) Serve baked and whole grain chips rather than deep fried, artery clogging chips.
9. Find “center”, keep your focus
Look INSIDE for the answer. We are getting larger simply because we are not centered each day. We rush around in our too busy lives, scattered and harried, eating anything that resembles food. And worse, we are plagued by ubiquitous advertising that seductively entices us to eat “foods that kill”. The process of “finding center”, that remarkable place of wisdom and peace that resides in every one of us, isn’t all that difficult. But it does take some time dedicated to simple quiet reflection and thought, time for daily goal setting.
If you are looking for easy ways to find center, practice your Easy Tai Chi and 4 Minute Fitness.

10. Plan and prepare
Practices like t’ai chi, yoga, 4 Minute Fitness, prayer and meditation are becoming so very popular because they are perfect methods for finding peace and balance. So each day during these busy times, take some time in quiet reflection. Spend more than your usual amount of time in the centering practice that works best for you.
Spend time breathing deeply and fully. Prepare for each day by deciding what you want, what you are going to eat and then find your deep resolve inside.
Of course, it also helps to learn strategies of 21st century culinary survival. Get educated. Be perceptive. Learn about the deceptive and dangerous strategies taken by junk food pushers. And learn how to play the game to win.
May you have a holiday season filled with wisdom, joyous exercise and healthful eating!

The Secret to Handling Holiday Stress
Without a doubt, this time of year can be stressful. There are the obvious approaches – don’t go into debt, don’t schedule too much in too little time, and be reasonable with expectations (odds are that Santa will not bring you a Porsche…). Life happens, and often it happens big during the holidays. So how do you deal with it? How do stay calm, peaceful and joyous?
Here is the best way for you to take charge, to be in control and not be a victim of your circumstance (oh, poor me…). Breathe. And breathe deeply. Taking a deep breath produces an automatic and almost instant “relaxation response”. And do it several times a day, especially when you are noticing an increase in your stress level or a decrease in your “fun level”.
And the best way to breathe deeply? In your 4 Minute Fitness and Easy Tai Chi practice. Then you get the added benefits of movement, balance, solitude and stretching. So – practice daily during these next few weeks, take charge and create a joyous holiday!
