We’ve Got It Covered: How Beef Packaging Can Help with Meal Planning

Heather Travis, Beef Information Centre

You’ve made the weekly meal plan, bought the groceries, loaded them into the house and then life gets in the way, as it tends to do, and the weekly meal plan is turned upside down. The time you thought you had on Monday to make the Fall favourite Hearty Beef Minestrone using lean ground beef is gone, so Monday’s meal becomes Tuesday’s meal, but do the groceries and their packaging type agree with this plan?

We know life gets interrupted, that’s why the type of packaging your Canadian beef comes in can really help with meal planning, especially when plans go out the window.

“Fresh beef comes in a variety of packaging options at the meat counter. Each option has its advantages, depending on how you want to use or store the beef.” says Joyce Parslow, a home economist with the Beef Information Centre (BIC). The trick, says Parslow, is knowing when you plan on using the beef and buying the packaging type to best suit your household needs. She suggests always looking at the ‘Best Before’ date to determine by when you need to either use or freeze the beef.

To help explain the variety of packaging types, the benefits of each, and tips on best storage methods, the BIC has created a handy PDF resource along with a quick video. “The variety of packaging types available today allow for much more flexibility in meal planning, ensuring no food is wasted and the beef you serve your family and friends is the freshest possible,” says Parslow.

Meal planning when plans go out the window just got a whole lot easier with Canadian Beef. No matter what type of beef packaging your family chooses Canadian beef has got it covered.
