Isolating but not Isolated!

Cohousing in the Time of COVID-19
by Patricia Sparks – Equity Member, West Wind Harbour Cohousing

In the age of social distancing, why would someone want to join a cohousing community? I can think of several good reasons. We are all in this together. But for those who live in isolated single family homes it may not feel that way. It may feel especially scary if you are in a vulnerable group, going out to shop, or to a medical appointment. Living in cohousing lessens those fears.

One might think that a group of many individuals and couples, living together might be a set-up for transmitting the virus. However, this is not the case. Each household has their own unit complete with kitchen and laundry facilities. In one such cohousing community, people who chose to do so sit in a lawn chair outside, six or more feet apart to share morning coffee or to conduct cohousing business. Those who are younger, less vulnerable, and who have protective equipment offer to shop for those more vulnerable. People trade tips on how to stay safe, combat boredom, share resources, and stay connected during these unusual times. All do what they can to help each other and feel more in control of their individual situations. It is an opportunity to experience the kindness of others and the best of human nature.

At West Wind Harbour even though we have not yet moved in together, we experience that sense of community in our monthly zoom meetings and our communications with each other between meetings. Already, we have experienced many bountiful acts of kindness.

Now more than ever, we need each other. Cohousing is one option for creating safety and connection. Like the old African saying is: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

West Wind Harbour is a cohousing community on the Sooke waterfront that will be ready for occupancy later this year.   The scenic image is of the view all members of West Wind Harbour will be enjoying once they move in! The group photo is of members at their regular monthly meeting. There are two units still available.  For more information, please contact us at info@westwindharbour.ca
