The sad story of the way the Municipality of North Cowichan has treated Green Aura ,using 19th century methods to deal with a 21st century social issue.
Green Aura Cannabis Canada was an upscale, community and education focused cannabis shop located within Chemainus BC. We opened November 18, 2016 and applied for retail licensing. We were denied our licensing based on the fact we were a cannabis shop and were issued two subsequent tickets for operating without a business license, which we paid in full.
On March 3, 2017, when our membership had just reached 500 local people, Green Aura was raided by the North Cowichan RCMP under the direction of the Municipality of North Cowichan.
Results of the Raid:
- Closed Green Aura for 5 days
- $30,000 worth of lab tested, top quality, medicinal cannabis products confiscated
- Over $50,000 worth of legal fees, with no end currently in sight
- Half the staff barred from the storefront location
- Over 8 months to rebuild trust from our membership and re-establish our brand
We reopened. We pushed forward. Our community grew. We hired local staff, supported local charity, and created lasting relationships with other local businesses. Our customers frequented 49th Parallel, Island Savings, Pharmasave, Sawmill Taphouse, Riot, and many other local businesses.
