Bamberton’s Mystery History.
Bamberton is one of the province’s most important historical industrial sites - but it’s still a mystery to most. Since 1911, gates and warning signs have discouraged the casual observer from discovering the fascination of the Bamberton site. Even now the rock quarry, historic village and museum are concealed from passers-by. Clinging to the steep mountainside between the Malahat Drive and the picturesque waterfront, this once-active cement factory, port and company town site quietly waits to open its gates and reveal its past.
Starting July 4 and running every Sunday until September 26 the Bamberton Historical Society is offering 90 minute bus tours of the Bamberton site.
Your tour begins at the original site manager’s house which now holds the Historical Society’s museum. As you travel down the old main street of town to the waterfront your guide will stop at several points of interest including the original quarry that extends over 1,000 feet into the mountainside
Visitors will also have an opportunity to watch a specially produced movie called Bamberton Gone But Not Forgotten. Using historic photos, movies, and recorded interviews with former residents and employees it tells the compelling story of this unique community that went from Dust to Bust!

DATE: FRIDAYS JULY 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th, 2010.
Topic: SENIOR DIALOGUES – “WHAT CREATES HOME FOR YOU”
Time: All four sessions are from 10:00am – 1:00pm (includes lunch)
Presenter: Jessie Sutherland, Founder of the Finding Home Initiative; Jessie is committed to building communities that foster a sense of belonging and has over 20 years experience in intercultural relations, community development and dialogue.
Session Description: Finding ‘home’ in a changing world can be challenging especially for seniors. These senior dialogues will open up discussions about “what home means to you”- recognizing that home is not just about the place you sleep every night. Some elements of ‘home’ are feeling a sense of belonging, feeling safe and feeling connected.
We’re seeking a dynamic group of 12 to 15 seniors who are committed to attending all four Friday sessions; are comfortable listening and sharing within a group; are interested in evoking change; are willing to share results and seek input from the greater community using tools created in the dialogues; and are willing to help move identified initiatives forward, lead change and/or facilitate future senior dialogues.
Our aim for this first dialogue session is to invite a diverse group of committed people with differing community vision, varied backgrounds and a commitment to create and evoke change by carrying ideas and dialogues forward. Therefore, when you call or email to register, someone will be calling you back to ask you a few questions before your registration can be confirmed. Free Admission
Thanks to Greater Victoria Eldercare Foundation for funding Senior Dialogues!
