Every day, new research is being developed and we are finding more and more uses for this extraordinary plant that has grown alongside human kind for a millennium.

Current research has shown there are many different properties to cannabis, many of which are known as cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are the active compounds within cannabis that result in both the psychoactive, as well as medicinal effects, of the plant. There are over 500 natural compounds within cannabis, and cannabinoids account for over 100 of them. Of these cannabinoids, two stand out- THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol).

For years, THC has been the focus of cannabis as this is the compound that leaves you with the physical and mental ‘high’. Through dedicated research, we have discovered many medicinal uses for THC including pain and insomnia relief, the ability to improve appetite, as well as help with nausea. Quite possibly the most exciting research is coming from cancer research where we have seen that THC is extremely effective in targeting the destruction of cancer cells while preventing further damage to surrounding, healthy tissue. THC has also shown great promise in treating muscle spasms and helping with inflammation.

Until recently, little was known about the medicinal effects of CBD. Unlike THC, CBD itself is entirely non-psychoactive and produces no ‘high’. In fact, research has indicated that CBD acts as an inhibitor to the high of THC. This anxiolytic compound works quickly to help relieve anxiety in many patients. CBD is also an incredible anti-inflammatory, neuroprotectant, and antipsychotic treatment. It helps to improve mood, alleviate pain and new research is showing promise as an anti-seizure medication.

We are just now beginning to learn about the true benefits that cannabis can offer those who are suffering with many ailments. What new benefits will we continue to see as we research the hundreds of other cannabinoids present in cannabis?
